Last week, I published the first of a two-part series celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. The recommendations continue this week with a list of great sitcoms, an awesome cocktail recipe and my favorite Spotify playlist. This is the perfect way to escape that debate debacle. Get into it!
- TO WATCH: I couldn’t pick just one this week, so I decided to list some of my favorite films and TV shows.
- Superstore (NBC) – If you’ve ever worked retail, you’ll appreciate and relate.
- Ugly Betty (ABC) – My dream as a teenager was to be a magazine editor at a glossy publication in New York. Betty lived my dream.
- Queen of the South (USA) – I love a good cartel-themed show. That’s all I can say.
- Vida (Starz) – One of the best dramas on TV in the last three years, period
- Devious Maids (Lifetime) – In this telenovela by playwright Tanya Saracho, the help gets their revenge.
- The Expanding Universe of Ashley Garcia (Netflix) – A 15-year old astrophysicist goes to live with her ex-NFL player uncle while she works for NASA. Yes, it’s as good as it sounds.
- La Corona – Documentary about a beauty pageant set in a women’s prison in Colombia
- Living Undocumented (Netflix) – Docuseries about the experiences of people whose lives hang in the balance as immigration reform stagnates
- TO EAT: Ask anyone in Atlanta and they’ll tell you that the best street tacos are at El Rey del Taco, located along the diverse Buford Highway corridor. This simple recipe for Steak Tacos & Mole Verde with Radishes & Avocado from Blue Apron is the closest I’ve found to be able to replicate them at home.
- TO DRINK: Mojitos are my favorite cocktail! I didn’t think they could get any better until I discovered this Blueberry Lemon Mint mixer by Stonewall Kitchen. Shake up 3oz of mix and 2oz of Richland Coastal Virgin Rum. Then pour it over ice and add 2oz of club soda and two slices of lime. You won’t regret it.
- TO PLAY: The Cafe Con Leche Playlist on Spotify has been my favorite playlist for several years. It’s a mix of Flamenco, Latin Jazz and the best of adult contemporary from Latin America.
- TO READ: Y’all know I live for a coming-of-age story. One of my all-time favorites is “Bless Me, Ultima” by Rudolfo Anaya. It was adapted into a movie in 2012. “Bless Me, Ultima” tells the story of a Mexican boy growing up in a Chicano community in the southwest. He grapples with faith, sexuality and politics with great humor and even deeper insight. It’s a must-read.
